Culture - The return of the extendedfamilies in the UK and the USA

1. Read the following text about thecoming back of the extended familiesand answer the questions.

Over the past few years, in both the USAand the Uk, the number of multi-generational households with three or four generations living under the same roof hasincreased.

This trend has been the result of severaleconomic factors.

High unemployment rates, part-time workand low-paid jobs have forced youngadults to move back with their parents.

In addition, families now face higher costsof housing and heavier pressures of bothchildcare and elderly care.

Living under the same roof with three or four generations can be frustratingbecause of the lack of space, independence and privacy, and the dailyconflicts brought about by differences invalues and attitudes.

However, its advantages outweigh thedisadvantages.

When living with members of their extended family, young children candevelop relationships with adults other than their parents and old people canbecome more active when interacting withthe younger generations.

Whether we accept it or not, the trendkeeps growing as more and more peopleare choosing traditional extended families.
